Local Fisheries Supports Food Security
700,000 TRY awarded
Challenge
In Foça, İzmir, local fish species such as mullet (kefal), salema (sarpa), and bogue (kupes) — once staples of the regional cuisine — are becoming culturally and economically marginalized. These species are often discarded or avoided by fishers due to their low market value and limited demand. As a result, small-scale fishers face declining incomes, and local food culture and marine biodiversity are under threat.
Solution
This project supports sustainable fisheries and food security by promoting the consumption of undervalued local fish species. By encouraging small-scale fishers to sustainably harvest these species and increasing consumer demand through gastronomy, education, and community events, the project aims to strengthen coastal food systems and improve livelihoods. It also introduces an innovative “Suspended Fish” initiative to improve protein access among food-insecure families in Foça.
Project Deliverables
Brochures, public service announcements, and QR-coded fish info signs will be designed to promote local fish consumption
- Development of recipes featuring local fish by chefs, students, and teachers from the local tourism high school
- Integration of these dishes into restaurant menus
- Planning and implementation of a Local Fish Festival
- “Suspended Fish” program will deliver fresh fish to at least 50 disadvantaged families
- 10+ short films will document the project and be shared online and submitted to film festivals
