Coral Reef Conservation In Bozcaada Island

680,650 TRY awarded

Challenge

The endemic coral species Cladocora caespitosa forms rare and fragile reef ecosystems along the Bozcaada coast. These coral reefs are increasingly threatened by illegal fishing, anchoring, mass tourism, and the escalating impacts of climate change. Lack of monitoring and limited public awareness further endanger their survival.

Solution

This project aims to protect and sustain the coral reefs of Bozcaada through a combination of scientific research, environmental education, community engagement, and creative public outreach. Conservation diving will assess reef health and biodiversity, while protection buoys will be installed to prevent physical damage. Artistic and educational activities will introduce coral ecosystems to children and visitors, and advocacy efforts will promote stronger marine protection policies in collaboration with local authorities.

Project Deliverables

  •  Underwater research dives will  assess the ecological status of the reefs, map habitats, and create a biodiversity inventory of associated marine life.
  • Protection buoys will be installed to reduce pressure from anchoring and illegal fishing.
  • A clay-based underwater sculpture workshop will be held for children and the local community to promote awareness through art and contribute artificial reef materials.
  • A digital sound-and-light installation titled “Voices of the Corals” will be exhibited to engage wider audiences.
